The Western Algarve is an area of spectacular natural beauty with dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and copious small, colourful fishing villages. This beautiful area has sunshine, beaches and an easy, friendly atmosphere.
Visitors love the climate and stunning scenery of Parque Naturel de Vicentina and the friendliness of the local people, their delicious foods, local fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, and the excellent local wines.
Burgau is a friendly former fishing village, west of Lagos, with small colourful houses, shops and restaurants packed into little streets sloping down to a beautiful sandy beach. Formerly a fishing village, Burgau is located on the edge of Parque Naturel de Costa Vicentina, a protected wildlife reserve with miles of stunning coastline, countless beaches, coves, gigantic cliffs, and the occasional (surprisingly good) restaurant.
Across the road from the Domus Iberica houses, the coastal track meanders over sand dunes, cliffs and little beaches with stunning coastal scenery and wildlife, an area rich in flora & fauna with a wealth of bird species. There you can walk eastwards towards Luz and Lagos or westwards to Boca do Rio, Salema and eventually Cape St. Vincent. This rough path is not suitable for small children or buggies.
If you have a car there are fantastic drives with really varied scenery from coastal to mountainous and everything in between! The Monchique Mountains and forested hills inland afford panoramic views of the entire Vicentina coastline. The lower reaches have forests of oak, cork, eucalyptus and almond trees with wild rosemary and cistus fragrance in the air. The spa town of Monchique, home of piri-piri chicken, has traditional hand crafts and colour. Silves, built around a huge, still intact Moorish castle, has a very different character, and offers speciality foods and local crafts.
