The island’s historic capital of Teguise is a 10 to 15 minute drive away and provides a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Costa Teguise, unless of course you go on a Sunday, when the market is in full swing. Take a stroll or swim on the Beaches
The main sandy beach Playa Grande is almost a kilometre long with comfortable sun loungers and parasols for hire at reasonable prices. The main resort town on the island has grown steadily over recent years. Its attractiveness lies mainly in the carefully developed low-rise buildings and extensive landscaped promenades. The old part of the town is little more than a village with its original fishing harbour. The resort has a wide selection of shops (selling everything from designer fashion, local linen, ceramics and handicrafts), restaurants (providing the widest choice of cuisine at prices much below UK and Irish levels), bars, discos and nightclubs.
Puerto Del Carmen is proud of its beaches and boasts more “Blue Flag Awards” than any other resort on the island. The “Blue Flag Award” is granted by the EU to beaches that meet exacting criteria. The blue flag awards are granted for cleanliness, the availability of public conveniences and shower facilities, duty lifeguards and importantly disabled access. The European Community make the awards annually. “Blue Flags” can be seen flying on the Playa Grande beach, Playa Matagorda, Playa los Pocillos and Playa Chica all in Puerto Del Carmen.
